FAQ

What is a fully automatic drum filling machine?
A fully automatic drum filling machine is a conveyor-integrated system that moves, positions, fills, caps and conveys 200L drums without manual operator intervention at each drum. The process: empty drums are placed on an infeed roller conveyor (manually or by forklift) → conveyor transports drum to the fill station → automatic stop mechanism centres the drum under the fill nozzle → fill nozzle descends into the drum bung opening → fill proceeds to preset net weight → nozzle retracts → drum moves to capping station → bung cap is pressed or torqued → sealed drum exits on the outfeed conveyor. One operator oversees the line and feeds empty drums. Throughput: 8–15 drums/minute for standard 200L drums, depending on fill volume and product viscosity.
How is an automatic drum filler different from a semi-automatic drum filler?
Semi-automatic drum filler: the operator manually positions each drum on a floor scale under the fill nozzle. The operator presses start; the machine fills to target weight automatically. The operator then moves the drum away and positions the next. Throughput: 3–8 drums/minute (limited by operator speed). Automatic drum filling line: drums move on a roller conveyor. No manual positioning per drum. Includes automatic drum stop, nozzle descent, fill, nozzle retract, and conveyor advance. Optional integrated capper. One operator manages the entire line. Throughput: 8–15 drums/minute. The automatic line is preferred for high-volume operations (>500 drums/day), for consistent fill quality, and to reduce labour cost. Semi-automatic is preferred for lower volumes, mixed container sizes, or where floor space and capital cost are constraints.
What types of drums can an automatic drum filling machine handle?
Automatic drum filling machines are designed for standard drum formats: 200L steel open-head drums (UN/DOT standard) — most common industrial and chemical drum. Lid is removed before filling; a bung cap is not used. 200L steel tight-head drums with 2-inch bung — the fill nozzle enters through the 2-inch bung opening. Used for lubricants, chemicals and food liquids. 220L HDPE plastic drums — same nozzle entry through the 2-inch bung. 60L steel drums and 30L kegs — with nozzle adaptor. The machine requires a level, consistent drum height to function automatically. Drums must be round-bottom or flat-bottom (not pallet-mounted IBC totes — those require a dedicated IBC filling station with different nozzle configuration).
How does automatic drum positioning work?
Automatic drum positioning on a filling line typically uses one of three methods: mechanical drum stop — a pneumatic or motorised stop pin rises from the conveyor to halt the drum at the exact fill position. When fill is complete, the stop retracts and the drum continues. Centring rollers — a pair of V-rollers or guide rails align the drum axis with the fill nozzle centre. Suitable for round drums that may rotate as they travel on the roller conveyor. Vision or sensor system — a photoelectric sensor detects the drum bung position. For tight-head drums, a servo-driven nozzle adaptor aligns with the 2-inch bung. High-end systems include bung orientation detection to ensure the nozzle aligns with the bung (not the cap) before descending. Most standard automatic drum fillers use a mechanical stop plus centring guide, which is reliable and low-maintenance.
Can automatic drum fillers handle both chemicals and food products?
Yes, with the appropriate material specification. For food-grade products (vegetable oil, liquid glucose, food flavours): wetted parts must be SUS316L; seals must be FDA-approved food-grade material (EPDM or silicone); the fill system must be CIP (clean-in-place) compatible; drum must be food-grade HDPE or coated steel. For chemical products (solvents, acids, alkalis, lubricants): SUS304 or SUS316L wetted parts with PTFE or EPDM seals depending on chemical compatibility; for corrosive chemicals, lined pumps and PTFE-lined hoses are specified. A single machine can be configured for one product category; switching between food-grade and chemical use is generally not recommended without a full CIP cycle and regulatory assessment. We recommend dedicated machines for dedicated product families in high-volume operations.
What is the investment for an automatic drum filling machine?
Automatic drum filling machine investment: basic fully automatic drum filling station (conveyor, auto positioning, load cell, no capper, 8–10 drums/min, standard products): $45,000–$80,000 USD. Automatic drum filling and capping line (conveyor in/out, auto fill, integrated bung cap press, 10–15 drums/min): $70,000–$130,000 USD. ATEX-certified automatic drum filling line (Zone 1, explosion-proof all components, 8–12 drums/min): $90,000–$180,000 USD. High-speed automatic drum filling line with drum inverter, rinsing and labelling: $150,000–$300,000 USD.
