Piston Filling Machine

A piston filling machine uses a positive-displacement cylinder and piston to measure and dispense liquid. The piston retracts to draw a precise volume of product into the cylinder, then advances to push it out through the fill nozzle. The volume is set by adjusting piston stroke length — mechanically on basic models, or via servo motor position on precision models. Piston filling works with thin liquids, medium-viscosity products and thick pastes. It is the most versatile fill principle for food, cosmetic and chemical applications.

Piston filling machines handle the widest viscosity range of any fill principle: water-thin liquids (water, juice, vinegar — <10 cP); medium viscosity (sauces, syrups, lotion — 100–10,000 cP); high viscosity (honey, gel, cream — 10,000–100,000 cP); ultra-thick paste (peanut butter, silicone, caulk — up to 1,000,000 cP with heated hopper and lobe pump in-feed). For viscous products, a heated hopper, heated product lines and a wide-bore cylinder prevent product from cooling and solidifying in the filling system.

Pneumatic piston filler: ±0.5%–±1% volumetric. This is adequate for most food and cleaning product fills. Servo-driven piston filler: ±0.3%–±0.5% volumetric. The servo motor positions the piston exactly at the same position every stroke, eliminating variability from pneumatic pressure fluctuation. Temperature-controlled piston filler: ±0.3% even with thermally sensitive products (chocolate, wax, hot-fill sauces). For pharmaceutical fills requiring ±0.1%, a check-weigher is added downstream to verify every container.

Yes. Standard piston fillers use a ball valve or slide valve that seats tightly on the valve seat and can jam on particulates >2mm. For chunky products with seeds, vegetable pieces, fruit pulp or herb flakes, specify: rotary valve piston filler (accepts particulates up to 15mm); wide-bore piston cylinder (reduces shear on delicate particulates); bottom-up fill to minimise splashing and foam.
