Frequently Asked Questions

Technical questions about ATEX certification, hazardous area classification and explosion-proof filling equipment.

What is ATEX certification and why is it required for filling machines?
ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosibles) is the EU directive governing equipment used in explosive atmospheres. Filling machines handling flammable liquids (flash point below 60°C) must be ATEX-certified to prevent ignition of flammable vapors. Zone 1 certification covers areas where explosive atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation; Zone 2 covers areas where it occurs less frequently. In most markets including EU, Middle East and increasingly Asia, ATEX or equivalent certification is legally mandatory for filling flammable products.
What is the difference between ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 filling equipment?
Zone 1 equipment (Category 2G) is designed for areas where explosive atmospheres are likely during normal operation — such as the immediate vicinity of filling nozzles or open containers. Zone 2 equipment (Category 3G) covers areas where explosive atmospheres occur only occasionally, such as the general production room. Zone 1 equipment requires more robust protection methods (flameproof enclosures, intrinsic safety) and costs approximately 30–50% more than Zone 2 equivalents. Our engineers will assess your facility classification and recommend the appropriate rating.
What flammable chemicals can your ATEX filling machines handle?
Our ATEX-certified filling systems handle IIA gas group chemicals (methanol, acetone, benzene, toluene, xylene) and IIB gas group chemicals (ethylene, propylene oxide, diethyl ether). Products include solvent-based paints, varnishes, lacquers, cleaning agents, adhesives, pesticides, lubricants, and pharmaceutical solvents. For gas group IIC (hydrogen, acetylene), please consult our engineers for specialized solutions.
How does your anti-static earthing system work?
Our explosion-proof filling systems incorporate a complete anti-static protection chain: conductive hoses and nozzles to dissipate electrostatic charge; earthing clamps with continuity monitoring that pause filling if earthing is broken; all metal components bonded to a common earth point; and anti-static conveyor belts. The system meets IEC 60079-32 electrostatic hazard requirements and prevents spark generation from static discharge — the leading cause of incidents in liquid chemical filling.
What is the filling accuracy for explosion-proof drum filling systems?
Our 200L drum filling systems achieve ±100g accuracy (±0.05% for a 200kg fill) using load cell-based net weight measurement. This exceeds EN ISO 9000 requirements for bulk chemical filling. IBC filling systems achieve ±0.2% accuracy. These specifications significantly reduce product giveaway compared to volumetric filling systems typically achieving only ±0.5–1% accuracy.
Do you offer ATEX filling machines for the European market?
Yes. All our explosion-proof filling equipment carries ATEX certification under EU Directive 2014/34/EU and is CE marked for unrestricted sale and use within the European Economic Area. Equipment is also IECEx certified for global markets. We supply to chemical manufacturers, contract fillers, and industrial distributors across Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Turkey and throughout Europe.
