What is the difference between aluminum, plastic and laminate tubes for filling?
Aluminum tubes: metal tube with fold-crimp tail seal. Advantages: excellent barrier (moisture, oxygen, light), impeccable consumer feel, classic pharmaceutical and cosmetic presentation. Disadvantages: one-use (cannot be re-squeezed without cracking), more expensive tooling. Applications: pharmaceutical ointments, high-end cosmetics, hair colour, adhesives. Plastic tubes (PE, PP, HDPE): flexible soft tubes with heat-sealed tail. Advantages: low cost, recyclable, good squeezability, wide range of decoration. How does tube filling and sealing work?
A tube filling and sealing machine processes tubes in the following sequence: (1) Tube loading: empty tubes are fed from a magazine or conveyor and placed onto mandrels on the indexing turntable. (2) Tube orientation: the printed side of the tube is oriented to face the correct direction using a photo sensor and servo motor (for decorated tubes). (3) Filling: the tube tail (open end) faces up; a fill nozzle descends into the tube and dispenses the measured volume of product (cream, gel, paste) as the nozzle rises to prevent air entrapment. (4) Tail sealing: aluminum tubes — the tail is folded and double-crimped by a crimp wheel; plastic tubes — the tail is flattened and hot-jaw or ultrasonic sealed; laminate tubes — similar to plastic. (5) Coding: the tail or cap area is printed with batch code and expiry date by inkjet or laser. (6) Discharge: sealed tubes exit via conveyor or chute.
