Toothpaste Tube Filling Machine

Toothpaste tube filling machines handle three tube material types, each with a different sealing method: aluminium tubes (the original toothpaste tube format, still used for specialised pharmaceutical and natural toothpaste): crimped/folded tail seal; the tube is pre-filled from the open tail end, then the tail is mechanically crimped and folded 2–3 times to create a hermetic seal. Aluminium tubes do not require heat sealing. Plastic laminate tubes (ABL — Aluminium Barrier Laminate, and PBL — Plastic Barrier Laminate): the most common toothpaste tube format globally; require heat sealing (heated jaw or hot air) to seal the tail; ABL tubes provide oxygen and moisture barrier (aluminium foil layer); PBL tubes are recyclable (all-plastic construction). Plastic tubes (HDPE/PP, no laminate): used for budget toothpaste and some whitening gel products; tail heat sealed; no oxygen barrier — suitable for products with short shelf life or preservative-protected formulas. For pharmaceutical toothpaste (fluoride prescription toothpaste, medicated mouth rinse): metal tubes or high-barrier ABL tubes are standard; ISO Class 8 cleanroom compatibility and validated filling accuracy (±0.5g per tube) may be required by pharmacopoeia standards.

Toothpaste tube filling machine speed is measured in tubes per minute (TPM): semi-automatic (single-head): 20–40 TPM; requires operator to load tubes manually. Used for R&D, small batches, and artisan oral care brands. Automatic (single-head servo): 60–80 TPM; fully automatic tube loading from magazine, filling, sealing, and coded discharge. Standard for small-to-medium toothpaste producers. Automatic (multi-head, 4-head): 120–160 TPM; multiple fill heads filling simultaneously; used by regional oral care brands producing 100,000+ tubes/day. High-speed automatic (8-head or rotary): 200–300+ TPM; used by major toothpaste brands; requires dedicated factory line. Speed-affecting factors: tube length and fill volume (longer tubes with larger volumes fill more slowly due to piston stroke time); toothpaste viscosity (whitening toothpaste with abrasive particles flows more slowly than standard paste); sealing method (ultrasonic sealing is faster than heated jaw but requires ABL laminate tubes); tube loading efficiency (pre-loaded tube magazines fill faster than individual tube loading). For a standard 75ml toothpaste tube at 100 TPM, a single 4-head machine produces approximately 6,000 tubes per hour.

A toothpaste tube filling machine can handle multiple oral care paste and gel products with recipe changeovers between products: standard toothpaste (fluoride, SLS, abrasive): standard servo piston, 50–100 TPM. Whitening toothpaste (contains abrasive particles 5–20 micron silica or calcium carbonate): same machine; large-bore nozzle (12mm+) recommended to prevent abrasive bridging at the nozzle. Natural/herbal toothpaste (often lower viscosity with plant extract suspension): standard piston; may require anti-settling agitation in the hopper if plant particles settle. Sensitive teeth gel (low abrasive, sometimes transparent gel): same machine; transparent gels require gentle handling to avoid air inclusion causing visual air bubbles in the tube. Teeth whitening gel (hydrogen peroxide 3–15%): requires chemical-resistant PTFE seals and SUS316L; avoid contact with copper or zinc alloys. Fluoride prescription toothpaste (pharmaceutical grade): requires GMP-compliant machine with validated dosing accuracy and batch traceability. Lip balm (in tubes): requires heated nozzle and product hopper (lip balm is poured warm and solidifies on cooling); fundamentally different from paste filling. Products NOT suitable on the same machine: liquid mouthwash (liquid filling — requires a different machine type), aerosol toothpaste spray.

Toothpaste is classified differently by market — cosmetic, drug, or OTC medicine — which affects manufacturing requirements: EU market: toothpaste is a cosmetic under EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009. Filling facilities must implement Cosmetic GMP (ISO 22716). Product-contact machine parts must comply with EU 10/2011 food-contact materials (same compliance applies to cosmetics). Fluoride toothpaste >0.15% F (prescription grade) is regulated as a medicinal product — filling must comply with EU GMP (Annex 1 for sterile/semi-sterile products if required). USA market: OTC toothpaste (fluoride, anti-tartar, whitening claims) regulated as an OTC drug under FDA 21 CFR Part 356 (Oral Antiseptic Drug Products). Filling facilities must comply with 21 CFR Parts 210/211 (GMP for drugs). Non-fluoride cosmetic toothpaste: FDA OTC Monograph does not apply; cosmetic GMP (21 CFR 700) applies. India (BIS): toothpaste requires BIS certification under IS 7802 (Dentifrices specification). The filling machine itself is not certified by BIS — BIS audits the product formulation, labelling, and production facility, including fill weight accuracy.
