A semi-automatic drum filling machine combines manual drum handling with automatic net-weight filling. The operator rolls or places the empty drum onto the weigh platform (using a drum roller or hand pallet truck), then initiates the fill cycle by pressing a foot pedal or control button. The machine opens the fill valve, monitors drum weight via load cells updated 200 times/second, slows the fill rate as it approaches target weight, and cuts off the valve at exactly the target weight. Accuracy of ±0.1% (±200g on a 200kg fill) is standard. The operator then removes the filled drum and brings the next empty drum to the station.

A semi-automatic drum filling machine handles 30–60 drums/hour depending on product viscosity, drum size and operator efficiency. For standard paints and liquids with settle time of 3–5 seconds on the load cell, 45 drums/hour (approximately 80 seconds per drum cycle including operator handling) is a realistic production rate. High-viscosity products or drums requiring longer settle times reduce throughput. For comparison, a fully automatic drum filling line achieves 60–120 drums/hour with less operator involvement.

Semi-automatic drum filling machines require an operator to move each drum onto the weigh platform and remove it after filling. Fully automatic drum filling machines use roller conveyors to automatically index drums through the filling station, cap station and out to palletizing without manual handling between stations. Semi-automatic machines cost $15,000–$60,000; fully automatic drum lines cost $80,000–$300,000. Semi-automatic is preferred when throughput is 200–500 drums/day, floor space is limited, or product mix requires frequent drum format changes.
