Auger Filling Machine

An auger powder filling machine uses a rotating helical screw (the auger) inside a fill tube to dose powder. When the auger rotates a precise number of turns — controlled by a servo motor and encoder — it displaces a consistent volume of powder into the container below. Accuracy depends on: (1) the consistency of powder bulk density; (2) auger pitch, diameter and rotation speed; (3) servo resolution and repeatability. Typical accuracy: ±0.5–1% volumetric. Adding a check-weigher with closed-loop feedback improves accuracy to ±0.1–0.3% by adjusting auger turns based on actual weighed results.

Best-suited powders: fine to medium granularity, consistent density, moderate flowability. Examples: protein powder (whey, plant-based), ground coffee, powdered spices, powdered milk, instant drink mixes, pharmaceutical active ingredients, fine chemical powder, starch, baking powder, powdered sugar. Challenging powders: very free-flowing powders (such as salt, coarse sugar) may overfill due to gravity flow after the auger stops — a slide gate or anti-drip valve is recommended. Very cohesive or sticky powders may bridge inside the hopper or auger tube — an agitator, vibrator or heated tube is needed.

Auger powder filling machines are extremely versatile and can fill into virtually any pre-made container: flexible bags (stand-up pouches, flat pouches, pillow bags); rigid cans (tinplate, aluminium, composite); plastic and glass bottles (HDPE, PET, glass); cartons and boxes (powder soap, baking mix); cups and trays with lid. The fill nozzle is interchangeable and positions above the container opening. Container changeover requires only a nozzle and height adjustment. For bags and flexible pouches, a bag clamp or filling spout sleeve holds the container steady during fill.

Single-head auger filler: one auger, one fill station, typically 10–60 fills/min. Lowest cost, simplest maintenance. Suitable for medium-volume production or a single SKU. Dual-head auger filler: two augers filling alternately into two containers; 40–120 fills/min. More output per footprint, still simple maintenance. Multi-head rotary auger filler: 4–16 auger stations on a rotating carousel; 60–400+ fills/min. Highest throughput; best for mass-market products (coffee, protein powder, spice jars). Cost scales with number of heads. For a startup or small-medium operation, a single or dual-head model is usually the most economical choice.

Auger sizing is based on fill weight range and powder type. Micro-auger (4–8mm diameter): 0.1g–20g fills; pharmaceutical micro-dosing, flavour sachets. Small auger (10–20mm): 5g–200g; spices, instant coffee, flavourings. Medium auger (20–40mm): 50g–2kg; protein powder, flour, milk powder. Large auger (40–80mm): 200g–5kg; bulk food, industrial chemical. The auger pitch (coarse or fine thread) also affects fill rate and accuracy.
